2012.12 WIM (UK) Newsletter November – December

By 14/11/2012November 16th, 2017Newsletter

Dear Women in Mining,

As Halloween gave rise to the inevitable landslide of year-end parties, and businesses throughout our industry ready for proceedings surrounding December’s Mines and Money conference, here’s wishing you well for the busy months ahead.

Join us at our education event in November, a panel session complete with keynote speakers from a range of mining career paths. Sign up for our 2012 champagne reception at Mines and Money, where we will launch our first research report into the board level appointments of women in the mining industry. To RSVP and receive more details, please read on or email us here.

It was fantastic to see a strong turnout for the September event, where Bloomberg Industries and the Association of Mining Analysts (AMA) addressed the financial challenges facing the mining industry. Thanks also go to all members and the numerous first-time attendees who joined us at our WIM (UK) Autumn Drinks, aptly held on Halloween and devoid of any mandatory costume-donning!

As the FTSE’s diminishing headcount among female board leaders is ever keenly scrutinised, we take this opportunity to express our gratitude for the support to date that WIM (UK) has received from our Platinum Sponsor, Anglo American, under the piloting of CEO Cynthia Carroll. Following more than five years during which her appointment to the company helm has encouraged a pivotal change in attitudes to female leadership in the mining industry, WIM (UK) extends our thanks and best regards to Carroll and to Anglo American and look forward to our on-going partnership.

Here’s to a rousing end to a monumental year,

Nuala Gallagher, WIM (UK) Newsletter Editor

WIM (UK) RECAPS

24 September: Financing in the mining industry in challenging times

On 24 September, WIM (UK) attended a Bloomberg Industries event in partnership with the Association of Mining Analysts (AMA), addressing the financial challenges facing the mining industry.

Jonathan Stephens, RBC Capital Markets, debated mergers and acquisitions outlooks for the resource sector. John Theobald, CEO of Anglo Pacific, addressed alternative sources of financing. Donald Douglas, CEO of Cambridge Risk, talked about the ‘upside’ of hedging, and WIM (UK) board member, Catherine Raw, Director and portfolio manager at Blackrock, presented a view from the buy-side.

Cynthia Carroll to step down as Chief Executive of Anglo American

WIM (UK) has been fortunate to have the strong support of Cynthia Carroll over the past few years, with Anglo American playing a key part in the organisation as our lead sponsor. Over this time the organisation has gone from strength to strength reaching 900+ members the year. Whilst we are sad to see Cynthia step down from Anglo American, we would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her support to date and wish her every success in her future endeavours.

Explaining her decision to step down, Cynthia said: “It has been a great honour to lead Anglo American. I am extremely proud of everything we have achieved during my period as Chief Executive and I will always retain enormous admiration and affection for this great company and its outstanding people. It is a very difficult decision to leave, but next year I will be entering my seventh year as Chief Executive and I feel that the time will be right to hand over to a successor who can build further on the strong foundations we have created.”

Paying tribute to Cynthia, Anglo American’s Chairman, Sir John Parker, said: “Cynthia’s leadership has had a transformational impact on Anglo American. She developed a clear strategy, based on a highly attractive range of core commodities, and created a strong and unified culture and a streamlined organisation with a focus on operational performance. Her legacy will include, among many other things, a step change improvement in safety, sustainability and the quality of our dialogue with governments, communities and other stakeholders. Her values represent the very best of Anglo American.

“The Board is enormously grateful to Cynthia for her dedication, her hard work and all she has achieved. We also very much appreciate her willingness to continue as Chief Executive until a successor can be appointed.”
