2012.03 WIM (UK) March – April 2012 Newsletter

By 27/02/2012November 16th, 2017Newsletter

Dear Women in Mining,

Thanks to all who joined us at our meetings and events throughout January and February. Be sure to sign up for our March event, a commodities master course with Clare Eilbeck, Analyst — Aluminium Markets and Eleni Joannides, Principal Analyst — Copper Market with research and consulting firm Wood Mackenzie.

In this newsletter, we present the new WIM (UK) Executive team and outline plans for our Membership Committee-spearheaded Entrepreneur Initiative. We recap the main agendas from our January-held seminar led by Debbie Thomas, Head of Deloitte’s Metals and Mining Group in the UK, which focused on the 2012 edition of Tracking the Trends. We also take a moment to appreciate the work of Dress for Success (DFS), the internationally active not-for-profit committed to finding employment for women, following our event held at L.K.Bennett in February, which highlighted the work of the organisation. Plaudits go to all that attended, shopped and donated professional wear!

Lastly, we’re all looking forward to International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March 2012. This year, the UN’s theme is Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty. Below you can find out more about how to get involved on the day.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch and share your thoughts by email.

WIM (UK) News

Meet the new Executive Team

In January this year, WIM (UK) hit 800 members; a key benchmark as we evolve into a bigger and stronger organisation. Our aim, to promote and progress the careers of women within the mining sector, has grown accordingly. It is something we seek to achieve mostly through our events, but this year we will also look to undertake new initiatives, including a research project.

We have a dedicated team of volunteers who sit within our Committees and assist as we work on growing WIM (UK)’s repute and role in the industry.

New Entrepreneurship Initiative

Changes in the job market in recent years have seen a number of our members establishing their own businesses. Being aware of this movement, the WIM (UK) Membership Committee is wondering how we might specifically support entrepreneur members.

If a number of members are “on the learning curve” in establishing a business, what experience and resources might they share? What specifically focused events might be of interest, for example, seminars, networking, or a skills-sharing network?

A questionnaires is included in the Newsletter circulated to WIM (UK) members by email, which will start the Membership Committee’s work on this initiative.  To find out more and share your views, please get in touch.

International Women’s Day 2012

International Women’s Day (IWD) falls on 8 March 2012. Thousands of events occur not only on this day but throughout the coming month to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities and women’s groups around the world choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues.

How will you take part? Click here to find out more.

Supporting Student Initiatives

WIM (UK) is proud to sponsor the Imperial College SEG Student Chapter Annual “Students Into Mining” Event, which will take place on Wednesday 7 March 2012. This event aims to provide students with a holistic view of mining, as well as providing information about careers in all aspects of the mining industry.

Click here to find out more.

We are also working on the organisation of events in universities, and seeking opportunities to participate in career-related events to share some insight about career opportunities and the importance of networking. If you would like to participate in this project or can facilitate contacts with a university, please get in touch with the Education team: we look forward to hearing from you!

24 January – Opinion Leader
Deloitte — Tracking the trends 2012

“What the governments want is not necessarily what the shareholders may want.”

“Are governments coordinated enough on what they ask for and that they get?”

The answer to this and many other questions are in our report on the January-held Tracking the Trends 2012 seminar with Deloitte.
