2012.01 WIM (UK) January – February 2012 Newsletter

By Newsletter

As we toasted WIM (UK) at the Annual Reception in December 2011, there was much to celebrate as the network has progressed spectacularly over the last year. WIM (UK) entered a new phase of its development in 2011, obtaining sponsorship funding from Anglo American, improving our website and organising its second Annual Reception with the support of Intrepid Financial, Zamadini and Deloitte. During this time the team of dedicated directors and volunteers who organise its many activities grew significantly. We are very grateful to all the firms who enthusiastically support this initiative and to the amazing women who have worked to make WIM (UK) into the professional organisation that women in mining deserve. Above all, we are thankful to all of you for making WIM (UK) such a great network.
2012 will see a new team at the helm of WIM (UK), with an Board of five members and a strengthened executive of Committees under the leadership of a new Executive Chairman; a new Administrator will be joining the team to facilitate coordination and improve services to members; and a great calendar of events is being lined up. It’s going to be a great year for WIM (UK)!

By Newsletter

As summer comes to an end, we recap on our excellent line-up of events until the end of 2011, the changes taking place within WIM (UK) and our review of what the organisation offers its members. WIM (UK) has now recruited a marketing and PR function to assist the committees and has tailored its focus as a membership group that promotes and progresses women’s professional development in the mining sector.

You will also find in this newsletter Gemma O’Loghlen’s report on the excellent workshop hosted by our Platinum sponsor, Anglo American on July 26, focusing on “Working in Partnership”. A packed crowd turned out to hear a range of presentations, as well as being treated to a surprise visit and brief talk by Cynthia Carroll herself.

The Anglo event set the scene well for WIM (UK)’s event series and will be followed in September by a seminar organised by Control Risks and the Annual Education Event in November. We look forward to seeing you all there.

We hope you enjoy this beautiful summer!

The first half of 2011 has flown by, as we reorganised WIM’s Committees, appointed two new Directors and hired our Senior Administrator. We hope these first steps will continue to allow Women in Mining to grow into the organisation you deserve.

Throughout this time, our Platinum Sponsor Anglo American has continually supported Women in Mining in its growth. This summer we will celebrate our first year of cooperation and wanted to take this opportunity to express our appreciation for the commitment shown to Women in Mining by Anglo American and the efforts of the working group we meet regularly. Anglo American will remain our Platinum Sponsor, even as we continue to seek additional funding to allow us to achieve all our objectives.

On 26 July 2011, Anglo American will host the first WIM Workshop, an afternoon of seminars and discussions focusing on the theme of “Working in Partnership”. This is a new event format for WIM, allowing participants not only to learn from the speakers but also to share their own experience on a topic that is particularly relevant to the mining industry. We look forward to seeing you there!

Spring is well and truly here! The first third of 2011 is already behind us, and after the long weekends of April everyone is getting back into the swing of things. Summer will be upon us before we know it.

Over the last two months, we have continued to reorganise Women in Mining to allow it to continue to grow and deliver the services you deserve, with the addition of new Directors, stronger Committees and the organisation of our first Women in Mining Council. To support all this growth, we are still working on raising sponsorship, so if you think your company could support Women in Mining, please get in touch!

We are launching our third annual survey, which focuses on the services to WIM Members: we ask all members to take a few minutes to complete this brief online survey to let us know how you think we are doing, what we could do better and how you would like to see the organisation evolve. Your feedback is very important to us and will guide all the work of the Directors and Committees.

Can you believe that January and February have already flown by?

With renewed dynamism in virtually every aspect of the mining industry, activity levels and enthusiasm are reaching all-time highs; it’s also “conference season”, culminating in Toronto’s PDAC next week after a very lively Indaba in February: of course Women in Mining is on trend, progressing briskly!

Since our last newsletter, we have focused a lot of our energy on laying the foundations for Women in Mining’s future. We are working to create a structure that will allow the network to continue to grow sustainably and a website that will deliver the services and information you deserve. The other key development of Women in Mining is the recruitment of our new administrator, Lorna Thomas: we are delighted to have her on board and welcome her to WIM!

To support all this growth, we are still working on raising sponsorship. We are delighted to continue our relationship with Anglo American plc, our Platinum Sponsor, and looking forward to establishing positive partnerships with other sponsors. If you think your company could support Women in Mining, please get in touch!

2010.12 WIM Newsletter Special Edition – Mines and Money 2010

As we speed towards the end of the year, we have good reasons to rejoice: in twelve short months, we have organised Committees and mapped out an ambitious growth strategy in the first quarter of 2010, confirmed it via the survey in May, obtained our first sponsorship in August and organised the second Education Event in October which allowed us to start new relationships with students and universities across the UK. Many of you participate in making these plans and ideas happen, and we are very thankful for your energy, creativity and enthusiasm!

Women in Mining is once again at Mines and Money London in 2010. Aside from our presence on the Exhibition Floor at Stand C5, we want to take this opportunity to celebrate our achievements and successes, including the launch of our new website, and promote our organisation and members to the industry.

We are distributing this Special Edition of the WIM Newsletter at Mines and Money London 2010.
