Dear Women in Mining,
WIM(UK) welcomes you to the October issue of our newsletter. We look forward to seeing many of you at tonight’s gathering, where we will celebrate LME Week 2013 with an expert panel of presenters from CME Group, Standard Bank and Bloomberg and discuss what is in store for the global metals markets. Further details on this event are below.
The past six months have been filled with new faces and a special mention must go to our new Committee volunteers, following our call out for help across the Sponsorship, Membership, Events and Communications committees, which we introduce below. We’re delighted to have them on board as we get ready for 2014.
It has also been great to see many first-timers at our seminars and gatherings over the summer. In September, a panel of experts tackled one of our industry’s most pivotal topics, Investing in and Developing Metals and Mining Assets in Emerging Jurisdictions, at a seminar generously hosted by Latham & Watkins. In July, we held our Summer Drinks Reception, kindly hosted by Canada House. And in May, our Membership Committee held WIM(UK)’s inaugural Speed Mentoring Dinner; a hugely successful occasion which convened members from graduate-level through to experienced career professionals. We were especially delighted to learn that at least one attendee secured a professional placement as a result of this event and are most grateful to all of the mentors.
As the busy winter conference season approaches, WIM(UK) has various events and initiatives planned. We look forward to updating you on all of our endeavours over the next couple of months and are grateful for your continuing support.

We look forward to seeing many of you at our panel event this evening and take this opportunity to remind you that registration for this event starts at 4:30pm.
In celebration of LME week, join WIM(UK) and an expert panel of presenters from CME Group, Standard Bank and Bloomberg for a presentation on the future of metal markets and all things commodity. In addition to providing an overview of the basics of metals trading, the panel will address more complex issues relating to the future of commodity exchanges, dispel ‘super-cycle’ myths, and provide a comprehensive outlook for commodity prices. This is a must-attend event for all those interested in the intricacies of commodity markets.
Other events for 2013 include our annual Education event in November and Mines & Money reception, details of which are being ironed out and will be with you shortly.

With so many career disciplines represented and an equally large number of experience professionals among the WIM(UK) membership, it can be difficult to fit in all of our excellent speaker candidates.
In order to maximise the diverse topics explored by leading opinion-formers at our events, as well as to act on your feedback from our most recent membership survey, we are now compiling line-ups for 2014. WIM(UK) EVENTS RECAP
September—Investing in and Developing Metals and Mining Assets in emerging Jurisdictions
On the evening of 10 September, some 70 WIM(UK) members gathered at Latham & Watkins’ London offices to tackle one of the most pertinent challenges facing mining developers and financiers alike. The panel, comprising long-term WIM(UK) supporters and noted experts in their respective fields, featured Judith Mosely, Business Development Director, Mining, Rand Merchant Bank; Jennifer Maxwell, Counsel, Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP; Victoria Salem, Senior Associate, Latham & Watkins; and, Philippa Spence, Partner, ERM.
The results are in!
Attendees were asked to vote on a number of topics addressed and the results were in equal parts surprising and tantamount to vital issues observed for resource nationalism risks, mine infrastructure, and the challenges and opportunities of sustainable development.
