Women in Mining UK Welcomes Centamin as an Industry Partner

By 07/01/2022News

London – 7 January 2022: Women in Mining UK (WIM UK) is pleased to announce a one-year industry partnership with Centamin plc, the established gold producer listed on the London and Toronto stock exchanges. In addition to financial resources to support WIM UK’s activities, the partnership includes one 12-month graduate role and two summer internships.

Alex Buck, Managing Director of WIM UK, said, “We are delighted to welcome Centamin as an Industry Partner. Centamin’s generous employment programme provides three young female mining graduates with an excellent opportunity and a career-forming experience at a leading FTSE 250 mining company. It would be great to see more companies following Centamin’s lead as it is through these types of initiatives that the mining industry will become more diverse and inclusive thereby paving the way to a stronger and more resilient industry.”

Martin Horgan, CEO of Centamin, added, “We believe diversity and promoting inclusion is an ethical imperative for a sustainable business.  At Centamin, we promote a culture of belonging throughout the business, where everyone is respected, valued and empowered to excel within the workplace, and importantly, by creating an inclusive culture that reflects the diversity of the countries in which we operate.

“Supporting Women in Mining UK as an Industry Partner was a welcomed opportunity. This year Centamin has initiated several efforts to strengthen gender diversity and inclusion across the business. Whilst a third of our Board and 30% of employees across our corporate offices are women, our focus is on actively recruiting women at our flagship asset, Sukari Gold Mine, where we have a lower female representation due to cultural barriers to employment. Understanding and, where possible, resolving these barriers is fundamental and we encourage our business partners and peers to look at how they too can proactively progress the diversity and inclusion agenda.”
