Women in Mining UK publishes the 2022 Edition of “100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining”

By 21/11/2022News

London – 21 November 2022: Women in Mining UK (WIM UK) is thrilled to publish the 2022 edition of its “100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining” (WIM100), a biennial publication that highlights the wealth of female talent within the global mining industry.  The book celebrates 100 women from around the world who go “above & beyond” and contribute so much to the industry and, as a result, are role models for everyone.

In 2022, WIM UK received 915 nominations for 491 women from 61 countries. This edition has been kindly sponsored by BMO Capital Markets, Heidrick & Struggles and BCG (Boston Consulting Group).

Carole Cable, Chair of WIM UK, said: “Congratulations to all the 2022 WIM100s! Today we celebrate 100 inspirational women from around the world; we hear their voices and their stories, and we share their journeys to show that diversity in mining is possible.

“For the world to transition to a low-carbon economy, we will need six times more mineral inputs in 2040 to achieve net-zero emissions globally by 2050.  The mining sector plays a vital role in the supply of these critical metals which will be needed to decarbonise and electrify as we move from fossil fuels to wind and solar power generation, battery and fuel cell-based electric vehicles, and hydrogen production At the heart of delivering this, are people but we will only be successful and sustainable as an industry if our workforce and our workplace are truly diverse, equitable and inclusive.

“However, we need to accelerate the pace of change to deliver the energy transition safely, sustainably, and equitably, so we need to think differently and put diversity and people at the heart of everything we do.  Congratulations and thank you to the 2022 WIM100 global inspirational women!”

Dr. Stacy Hope, Managing Director at WIM UK, added, “Every two years, Women in Mining UK has the privilege of reviewing hundreds of nominations for women who are making the mining industry safer, more inclusive and, hence, truly sustainable. The 100 women who have been selected for the 2022 edition are tangible proof that the mining industry, and all the people it impacts – from the workers at the mine to the end consumers – are better off because women consistently go above and beyond.

“As in previous years, the 2022 WIM100s represent a variety of roles and responsibilities, including a strong emphasis on sustainability and climate change mitigation. This goes beyond decarbonisation and includes biodiversity conservation, technological innovation, and nature-based solutions. What is  particularly interesting in this cohort is the increase in health-focused roles. I believe this is due to a Covid-inspired pivot by mining companies, which now have a greater understanding that their internal and external stakeholders’ health is paramount. This interesting development also aligns with the bigger picture: the sector is clearly evolving and mining leaders see the industry’s role through a more holistic lens.

“I hope this book inspires systemic changes at organisations so that women are given the space and support to succeed and that governments will make legislative reforms that make a career in mining more appealing to women. I also hope this book will shed light on the ever-changing narrative of the mining sector – one that is evolving and proving vital to a sustainable future – and offers inspiration to young people, who may, one day, become part of the future talent pipeline the industry desperately needs. The mining industry will be more resilient, stronger and, ultimately, more successful if we continue to hire, promote and empower women.”

William Smith, Head of International at BMO Capital Markets, said, “BMO recognizes the importance of an inclusive society for the future and is committed to removing barriers to women’s employment and economic empowerment. We are proud to support the fourth consecutive edition of WIM100 celebrating the incredible contributions and accomplishments of women to the metals and mining industry. Congratulations to all the women featured in the 2022 edition.”

Tim Jensen, Metals & Mining Sector Leader, Americas at Heidrick & Struggles, commented, “Creating a diverse talent pipeline is one of the biggest challenges facing the mining industry. We hope the WIM100 publication will continue to inspire young women around the world to join the sector. Congratulations to all the WIM100s.”

Jorge Gouveia de Oliveira, Metals & Mining Sector Leader, EMEA at Heidrick & Struggles, added, “At Heidrick, we spend a lot of time identifying and helping our clients develop women & diverse leaders across the sector. We’re delighted to celebrate this cohort of WIM100s and to support their ongoing success.”

Adrian Schulte Steinberg, Managing Director and Partner at BCG, said, “As we progress in the energy transition, the mining industry is at an inflection point. We must find and develop talent at an accelerated pace. Improving gender diversity, equity and inclusion has become a strategic priority, as research has shown the resulting benefits in levels of innovation and productivity. There is no simple route to success; however, identifying role models and celebrating them is key because this is how we attract women into the field. Congratulations to all!”
