Mining News

March 2011 – Community development must lie at the heart of any mining operation, says Cynthia Carroll, CEO of Anglo American, in the latest video produced by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). “Today we support well over 3,700 businesses around the world from South Africa to Venezuela, to Chile to Brazil and now in Peru” Cynthia Carroll says in a conversation with ICMM President Anthony Hodge. Ms Carroll adds that in 2009 her company invested 82.5 million dollars in social investment as part of her company’s effort to create small and medium enterprises that will sustain host communities in the long term. Anthony Hodge points out that mining companies can no longer operate, without effective community engagement. He says: “the greatest insurance policy that any mining company can have is community trust”.

Today, the organization brings together 18 mining and metals companies as well as 30 national and regional mining associations and global commodity associations to address the core sustainable development challenges faced by the industry.
