Investing in African Mining Indaba 2011 – Press Review

The Financial Times reported that the “Mining jamboree exposes new-found confidence” and highlighted that “Aussie miners dig Africa“. 

In Mining Weekly, KPMG head of markets for energy and natural resources Carel Smit observed that the “buoyant Indaba reflects confidence in mining sector“.  Other articles in Mining Weekly’s Indaba Roundup focused on IFC’s announcement of its intention to invest $300-million in mining companies operating in Africa over the next three years and China’s role in leading a new investment wave in Africa.

Resource Investor published a number of articles in relation to Indaba, including some of the Indaba speeches and addresses and in particular the welcome address of Susan Shabangu, Minister of Mineral Resources for the Republic of South Africa, a summary of David Hale’s keynote  address, and the remarks of Ann Harrap, Australian High Commissioner to South Africa.  Ahead of the Indaba, Resource Investor also published an article by Lex Africa (a network of law firms in 30 African countries) members highlighting the most pressing challenges facing the growth and development of mining in their counties, and outlining what needs to be done to address these challenges.

Miningmx similarly covered the conference with a number of articles including on Credit Suisse analyst Tom Kendal’s presentation on the gold outlook, the presentation on PGM outlook by Stephen Forrest, CEO of research house SFA-Oxford, the diamond outlook presentation by diamond analyst Chaim Even-Zohar and Cynthia Carroll’s address.

Minefund also reported on the conference, including two articles focusing on the keynote address by former BlackRock fund manager Graham Birch, and particularly his remarks on gold investment and ETFs and some of the lessons learned as a fund manager.
