Clean Energy for Mining, kindly sponsored by Aecom.

April 10, 2019 at 18:00 - 20:30

WIM are delighted to host an evening with the London based AECOM International ESIA and Social Sustainability Team.  Transitioning to renewable energy and low-emission technologies to power mining operations is becoming a key part of companies’ strategies to improve their environmental performance and contribute to decarbonising the global economy.  With greater access to more affordable clean technologies, this transition could be a win-win for the mining sector and the environment.

Yet many questions remain unanswered.  For example are investors willing to finance the costs of new renewable infrastructure?  Will regulators and local governments support these schemes?  How will communities benefit from this renewable energy infrastructure?  Accounting for almost two per cent of global energy consumption, the mining sector is a major energy user.  Join us to debate the potential benefits and pitfalls of making the energy used for mining greener.

Moderator:

Sian Bradley, Research Associate, Energy, Environment and Resources, Chatham House

Speakers:

Richard Lowe, Director of Power and Industrial Consents, AECOM EMEA

Sarah Bell, Director of Health, Safety and Product Stewardship, ICMM

Perrine Toledano, Head of Extractive Industries, Columbia University’s Centre for Sustainable Investment

Following the speaking session there will be an opportunity for Q&A with the panel, followed by drinks.
