FT Mining Summit

September 26 - September 27

The demand for critical minerals has escalated as governments race to secure the raw materials required for the energy transition. This surge in demand has created a monumental change within the industry, bringing new opportunities for miners but also concerns about where supply will come from. How can mining companies adjust their practices and portfolios to continue to create value in this newly dynamic and fiercely competitive landscape?

The 5th edition of the FT Mining Summit will gather leading miners, investors, financiers and policymakers for thought-provoking keynotes and lively debates. FT moderators will delve into the most critical topics for the industry, including balancing supply and demand, navigating geopolitics, realigning portfolios and much more, all whilst setting the agenda for LME Week ahead.

Our Managing Director Dr Stacy Hope will be contributing on the panel on 26 September, 15:30 – 16:10, for the following session:

‘Mining’s social licence to operate – Adjusting to a digital world’

A social licence is crucial for securing permits, attracting investment, and avoiding costly delays. However, the rise of social media platforms like TikTok has created new challenges for mining companies in maintaining their reputation as they often amplify negative perceptions of mining projects. How can miners navigate this landscape, tell their story about engaging with local communities, and utilise social media as an opportunity for better dialogue and trust-building?

  • How can the industry further build on the positive perceptions coming from its association with the energy transition?
  • What new tools does the mining industry need to adapt to the new challenges of communicating the industry’s benefits to the community?
  • How are mining companies engaging with communities on the ground to prevent negative perceptions that can be amplified online?
